Phil’s Story – Episode 1
Our first episode features Phil. He came home from school when he was about 10 years old and found his mother bleeding. She died that night. The next day he came home to find his father had committed suicide.
Probably suffering post traumatic stress, he felt he was supposed to be continually grateful for the kindness of foster parents. He retreated into books and work.
Living with chronic, deep depression, Phil maintained this coping strategy for the next 40 years. It became too much when he was made redundant. His mental health spiralled, his alcohol dependency grew, and he attempted suicide.
Today he is an Expert by Experience with Birmingham Changing Futures Together’s.
