Podcast - Phil's Story
Birmingham Changing Futures Together’s podcast series launches! Changing Futures has produced a new podcast series highlighting the issues faced by the city’s most vulnerable, and advocating for the changes to services needed to help them lead fulfilled lives. The series will explore the importance of lived experience when working with people facing homelessness, substance misuse, mental health and re-offending.
Our first episode features Phil. He came home from school when he was about 10 years old and found his mother bleeding – she died that night. The next day he came home to find his father had committed suicide. Probably suffering post traumatic stress, he felt he was supposed to be continually grateful for the kindness of foster parents, he retreated into books and work. Living with deep, chronic depression Phil maintained this coping strategy for the next 40 years. It became too much when he was made redundant causing his mental health to spiral and his alcohol dependency grow, until eventually he attempted suicide. Today, Phil is an Expert by Experience with Changing Futures Every Step of the Way project.
